As an adult, you are likely already aware of all the amazing benefits of visiting your dentist every six months for your regular preventive dental exams and cleanings. These are your biannual opportunities to get clean teeth, updated X-rays, and screenings for a variety of oral health issues. But for many new parents, it may not be as obvious why their little one should begin dental appointments before they even have a full set of teeth. Here’s a closer look at the importance of dental checkups for your baby, and what you can expect the first time you go!
A New Beginning: Your Child’s First Dental Visit
While it may seem premature to visit the dentist with just one tooth sticking out, the American Dental Association recommends taking your baby to have their smile examined within six months of their first pearly white emerging, or by 12 months if they haven’t had any make their debut.
Your baby’s first visit to the dentist shouldn’t be as involved as yours or an older child’s regular appointment and should only last about 45 minutes. When you arrive, you’ll be checked in, and a member of the dental team will walk you and your tot back to the exam room. Once you and baby are comfortable in the dental chair (they can sit on your lap), you’ll meet the dentist, who will gently examine their smile and evaluate the condition of their gums and any teeth. In most cases, your little one won’t need X-rays just yet, but if there is already significant decay or any other issues, they may be recommended.
Next, a member of the dental team may perform a very gentle cleaning on any visible teeth. This may not be necessary, but it can help teach your child that they’re safe at the dentist’s office, and that cleanings are nothing to fear. Then, if everything looks good, you’ll be free to schedule their second dental exam to take place in about six months.
Staying the Course: Caring for Baby’s Smile at Home
Once you return home, it’s important to maintain your baby’s oral health on your own. While they may have just one tooth (or none at all), be sure to keep their mouth clean with regular brushing and flossing. This not only keeps their teeth healthy, but it also helps cement the idea that oral hygiene is important and there’s no reason to be afraid of someone cleaning and examining their mouth. Then, as more teeth erupt, they’ll feel calm and confident with all aspects of dental care, including brushing, flossing and regular dental checkups!
Remember, while it may seem a little soon to bring a baby to the dentist for just one tooth, excellent oral health is a lifelong commitment, and one that should begin at their very first smile!
